Friday Update 12-3-10

Friday Update
December 3rd , 2010

The December edition of “Educational Leadership” magazine focuses on the issue of The Effective Educator. I have always believed that good teachers can come in many different types. Some may be highly organized planners who get the most out of every school day while others may be creative artists who constantly capture their students’ imaginations to push them to be their best. Some teachers do both of those things well while most of us fall somewhere in between. In short, I believe that effective teaching is both a science and an art that combines good strategies within an environment that enriches and challenges our students. Effective teaching is most evident in clear learning results and the most effective teachers are constantly growing to show improvement.

There are a few key points in the “Educational Leadership” that are worth mentioning and that tie into my beliefs:

-Teacher effectiveness is now clearly tied to learning (results).
-The best teachers I have known are humbled by how much more they need to learn (improvement).
-Without exception, (effective) teachers define their role as doing whatever it takes to ensure their students’ success (results).
-The most effective teachers are the most eager to talk about their failures (improvement).
-Effective teaching must be in service of student learning (results).
-Great teachers possess many intangible attributes (art).
-Expertise does not happen by chance. It requires deliberate practice (science).
ducational Leadership - December 2010

Friday Update

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for all the blessings in your life. I am thankful for so many things including: a wonderful wife and three beautiful kids, a hard working staff, students who love us no matter what, an office staff that rocks, music to soothe my nerves, a cool fall morning, Christmas is on its way. I urge you to find the blessings in your life and to acknowledge them. While no one’s world is ever perfect, we all can look for the “good things” to try to keep our glass half full.

Friday Update - 11-12-10

Friday Update
November 12th , 2010

I hope that you all had a good weekend. The intent of inviting James Lucas to our staff meeting last week was to try to ease some fears about how the new Zone 7 elementary school will affect Southwest. While it did seem to help to explain the process, I know that we all still have many unknowns. That is a fact that we can not do anything about. Our job for now is to do our best to serve the students that we have now and to let the other things about next year take care of themselves. There are no guarantees in life and we simply have to “live in the present.” Thank you for all that you do every day for our students.

The Smile
By - Karen Kimbrell

On the first day of this school year, I noticed a boy sitting in the back of my classroom, expressionless, apathetic, and unmotivated. He quickly became a child that consumed a lot of my thought time. He never smiled, He never interacted with his classmates, He looked and acted the same every day - expressionless and unmotivated. I went to his 3rd grade teacher and she said "Yes, that's John. He'll be that way all year." He attempted little of his work, he seldom raised his hand, and his facial expression never changed. I think that is what grabbed me the most - he was flat emotionally all day, every day. When you would hug him or show any kind of affection, he showed nothing in return. He was just "there". As the school year progressed, it was obvious to the class that he was different, but they just ignored him, They knew what he was like from being in previous classes with him, but I didn't want this year to be like every other year. One day this past February, I was teaching at the overhead and I looked right at him and he smiled at me! I was so stunned and elated everything stopped! I stood there a moment and went over to him and threw my arms around him. He didn't react to the hug, but he smiled! The first change in his expression I'd seen all year! Now its May and a few more things have happened, He's interacting a little more with his peers, he's completing some of his assignments, and he's realized that he's good at reciting poems - so he recites quite often! But the biggest thing is that he feels a connection with me. Shortly after "the smile," I returned to my classroom after car duty, only to see John vacuuming our classroom, He said in a very shy voice, "I want to help you." I was sick last week and out of school 4 days, I went to my front door and he had made me a card. It said, "Miss Kimbrell, the Bestest teacher in the whole world, I hope you fill better rill soon." That little card is why I teach school and love what I do. It is because of all the little Johns that sometimes need more than the 3 R's. By the way, while on my journey with John this year, I've come across some readings on a syndrome called "Aspergers" which I think he may have. It's a very high functioning form of autism and quite interesting.

Friday Update 10-15-10

Friday Update
October 15th , 2010

In a school as large as ours there will inevitably be situations big and small involving either students or staff. How we handle those issues is as important as anything that happens in our school. Supporting each other through tough times and through various issues that we face is part of what can make a school outstanding and also what can tear a school apart. Our professional responsibility requires us to have appropriate discussions about our students and about each other. I expect all of us to follow this guideline no matter where we work in the school. Sometimes situations involving school personnel can not be discussed or explained. That is just how it is. Southwest has always been an awesome school in terms of having a family atmosphere. One way we can help keep it that way is to be kind to each other and to support each other. We all need support and positive words to be our best.

“The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.” Benjamin Franklin

As the end of the first quarter approaches, it is easy to get bogged down in the “negativeness” within the business of school. I have always encouraged you to draw on the positive energy of your students to help maintain a positive classroom environment. One way to add more positive energy to your classroom is to add more praise. It should be done, however, in the correct way.
Dr. Ben Bissel (1992) wrote that there are five key characteristics of effective praise: authentic, specific, immediate, clean and private. Children are smart enough to know when they are getting authentic praise. Knowing that they are being recognized for something true makes a big difference. Specific praise helps to ensure that a student’s positive actions or behavior is reinforced. When praise is immediate the reinforcing effect is even more powerful. Clean praise for students comes without strings attached. There is no “but…..” attached to the praise or the unrealistic expectation that the student will never do something wrong in the future. Finally, Dr. Bissel believes that the most lasting praise is done in private. A personal bit of praise delivered in a private manner can help solidify the student-teacher relationship. However you choose to praise your students can make a tremendous difference to both their attitude and yours.

“If one man praises you, a thousand will repeat the praise.”
Japanese Proverb

Friday Update 10-1-10

Friday Update
October 1st , 2010

This week our PLC’s got off to a great start! It was good to have a few minutes to speak with you in a small group setting and to celebrate all that we accomplished last year. We have to keep building on those successes in order to be our best. We also shared some specific information regarding how your students performed last year. While we have to be proud of last year, we also have to be ready to learn and stretch even higher. Our professional development plans will be developed over the next few weeks and we would like for you to think about some specifics about how you can keep growing as a professional. The more we engage ourselves and our students in reflective dialogue, the more we will grow. I am proud of all of you and the work that you do every day.

Friday Update 6-4-10

Friday Update
June 4th, 2010

All good things must come to an end! On the school news this morning when I said that this was the last Friday of the school year it felt pretty good. This has been a year full of challenges, but you all have handled everything that has been thrown at you as well as could be expected. We have much to be proud of so I want to formally thank you all for pouring yourselves into making this a successful year. Hopefully, we have all learned lessons along with our students and will come back next year even better. Our preliminary EOG scores look good so our hard work and preparation this year and previous years seems to be reflected in our students’ performance. We will share details at our end of year staff meeting on Friday, June 11th. Great job!

Friday Update 5-21-10

Friday Update
May 21st , 2010

As we get even closer to the end of the year, it is easy to get bogged down in all of the end-of-year “stuff”. It is important that we take time to reflect on all of the wonderful things that we share with our students during the school year. Yes, academic learning is our number one priority during the course of the school year, but we do much more with our students than that. You lead them through life lessons, enrichment activities, etc. that will stay with them for years to come. We need to celebrate ALL of the accomplishments for the year both academic and non-academic.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop to look around once in a while you could miss it.”
From the movie 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'

Friday Update 5-14-10

Friday Update
May 14th, 2010

As we wind down the school year, our focus is forced to move to End-of-grade tests and end of year assessments. While we know that these provide important information for determining how much our children have learned, they are not the only ways that we measure success. As elementary school employees we are charged with guiding their learning AND their development into good people. I trust that our assessments will reflect the hard work that we have done with our students, but please remember that we also affect our children in other ways that can not be assessed. Thank you for loving and nurturing our children every day so that they love coming to Southwest.

Nothing you do for children is ever wasted. They seem not to notice us, hovering, averting our eyes, and they seldom offer thanks, but what we do for them is never wasted.
-Garrison Keillor

Friday Update 5-7-10

Friday Update
May 7th, 2010

I have talked with you from time to time about my appreciation for the great things that mothers are able to do. My career in education has blessed me with the opportunity to work with many wonderfully gifted people and most of them have been women. The term in loco parentis, Latin for "in the place of a parent" or "instead of a parent," refers to the legal responsibility of a person or organization to take on some of the functions and responsibilities of a parent. Our jobs can be intimidating when you think about all that we are responsible for on a daily basis. We have to keep our “children” safe, nourished, challenged and happy. Please know that you do that VERY WELL. Whether you are a mother or not, please know that we appreciate what you do every day for our students.

This week we were able to show our fantastic volunteers how much we appreciate what they do. As tough as things seem at times, we are truly fortunate to be able to have the strong support of many of our parents as well as the community. Please make sure that we let those folks know how much we appreciate them.

Friday Update 3-19-10

Friday Update
March 19th, 2010

I shared with you at this month’s staff meeting that the central office administration had shared some information about stress. This year has been especially stressful and we are going into our most stressful time of every school year. In order for all of us to be “the best” for our students (YES, me included), we must be mindful of our own stress levels and how to handle it in healthy ways. The tips below were part of the information that was shared with principals.

Find Ways to Dispel Stress
Get time away. If you feel stress building, take a break. Walk away from the situation.
Talk it out. Sometimes the best stress-reducer is simply sharing your stress with someone close to you. The act of talking it out – and getting support and empathy from someone else – is often an excellent way of blowing off steam and reducing stress.
Cultivate allies at work. Just knowing you have one or more co-workers who are willing to assist you in times of stress will reduce your stress level. Just remember to reciprocate and help them when they are in need.
Find humor in the situation. When you – or the people around you – start taking things too seriously, find a way to break through with laughter. Share a joke or funny story.

“Teaching is painful, continual and difficult work to be done by kindness, by watching, by warning, by precept and by praise, but above all, by example.”

FYI/Reminders
-The 2010 TWC Survey is on-line at http://www.ncteachingconditions.org/ - look for more information from Pateah East about how we can earn incentives for our school.

-The Teacher Notification of Intent web site is ready! The link is now up and available to teachers via the Employees page of the WS/FCS web site. All full-time teachers need to complete an intent form (we have a different process for part-time teachers). The deadline is April 16th.
-Just a reminder that if you would like to make a contribution to the FCAE campaign fund please see Terry Zimmerman, Pateah East, or Kathi Lawrence

-The RJM Financial Southwest Golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 9th at Salem Glen Golf Club. We are still seeking players, teams, sponsors as well as donations for the raffle. During the next three weeks, students may pay $1 to have their name put on a “golf ball” that will be used to decorate the hallway. Please send your collection envelopes to Cathy Weiss daily

- If anyone has any extra ziploc sandwich bags or paper towels in their classroom that they would be willing to donate to the health room, they would be greatly appreciated.

- Thanks for the “goodies” we have been enjoying for Friday lunches. Just a reminder for the last week:
March 26th – Administration, 1st grade teachers and PRTS

-Please remember that next week is the designated week for the Social Studies lessons on the Census. If you recall, Debbie shared some resources with you at our last staff meeting.
