Friday Update
October 30th , 2009
Now that first quarter is over, we know more about our students than ever. As a “Learning Organization”, we are expected to use that information thoughtfully. We will be working over the next several weeks to try to provide more resources for your students who are consistently working below grade level. Schools that perform well year in and year out have multiple “safety nets” to help those students who have higher needs. It is our job to help provide more resources for you in order to meet those needs. During our “10 minute conferences” that I will have over the next few weeks, I would like to focus on ways that we can help you reach those students. Thank you for all that you do to reach those students every day.
"A teacher is a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom in the pupils." -- Eve Garrison

****A note from Amy Tilley****
Teachers,
You should have either received a Boxtops Envelope in your box, or have one from last year. If you do not have one, you need to put a note in Amy Tilley's box, or send her an email immediately. You may collect the Boxtops in some other container in your rooms if you wish, but I prefer them to be given to me in the envelopes. We will be starting our first Back to School contest soon. For those of you who are new, your students will be bringing in Boxtops. Please collect them in the envelopes. Once the contest starts, I will put the collection box by the cafeteria, unless someone thinks there might be an easier or better location. You may turn your envelopes in daily, it helps me to count a little at a time rather than get 1000 at one time. I will tally the totals and the winning class will get a pizza party. I am going to order some other goodies this year as well. This is a pretty good money maker for our school and gives us money that is used to give you your money at the beginning of school. The homeroom teachers that really "RAH, RAH" this in their rooms are usually the ones that win, so talk it up.
Thanks, Amy Tilley

I am going to order some other goodies this year as well. This is a pretty good money maker for our school and gives us money that is used to give you your money at the beginning of school. The homeroom teachers that really "RAH, RAH" this in their rooms are usually the ones that win, so talk it up.
Thanks, Amy Tilley

Please stay informed and keep “your calendar” up to date. The calendar beside Nellie’s desk will be coordinated with our online calendar so make sure that you know what is going on. It is also important for each individual and group to put your events on our school office calendar. Everyone has done an awesome job so far of giving your information to Nellie. Friday Update
September 14, 2007
Yesterday’s assembly was a really nice experience for me and our entire school. While we have to be careful about compromising “academic time”, our assembly served a few key purposes for us. When a school’s enrollment approaches 1,000 students, it is difficult to maintain the feel of a close-knit school community. To me, assemblies such as the one yesterday, help keep us a close-knit school community.
Thank you to Gloria Allen and Kellee Church for doing such a nice job with our patriotic celebration.
Please continue to reinforce the points I made with our students regarding school safety. It will take some time and training for them to make our hallways and pick-up areas more safe and orderly. Please remember to make can collection counts a regular part of your day. The money that we earn through can recycling will go directly back into our school (wish list items, technology, STAFF APPRECIATION, ect.).
The staff conference schedule sign-up will be outside my door by Monday. Thank you for all you do and keep up the great work!!

I have to say that I am enjoying our quick, “10 minute” conferences so far. There are many issues to discuss (some heavy, some light), but it also gives me the chance to get to know you all better. The more comfortable you feel sharing concerns and praises, the better our school will be. I appreciate the thoughtful and professional conversations as well as the more informal chats. They all serve us well.
You should begin to hear about the “Classroom Walkthrough” training that I received last week. The district is giving us another coaching tool to help us learn how to improve our use of “Best Practices.” You will be hearing more about “Classroom Walkthroughs” in your grade level meetings in the next few weeks.

Our meeting Tuesday was just the start of what I hope will be a series of informative and helpful staff training sessions. Yes, we are still having meetings, but I want them to be MORE than just meetings. In order to help me lead us to use our time more effectively, I am asking for your feedback. As we have our training sessions, please let me know what is useful and what is not useful. I would also invite you to offer suggestions as to what information/resources you would like to see when we cover specific topics. Our next staff meeting will focus on our students in the English as a Second Language program. I have some ideas as to what I would like to share on this topic, but would like for you to help me focus our presentation so that it is THE BEST.

Friday Update
October 19, 2007
Our growing ESL population has added a new dynamic to our school. This year, we have tried to renew our efforts to improve the connection between school and home for these families. Our PTA is committed to helping these efforts and several bilingual parents have agreed to serve as liaisons to our Hispanic community. They will help with translation, recruitment and anything else that will help bridge that gap. This Tuesday is our first Southwest Noche Hispana for the 2007-08 school year. I encourage all of you to help publicize this event and talk with your students about what it means so that we can maximize the effect. Improved communication and better connections will help to make all of our students more successful.

Friday Update
November 9, 2007
After just dealing with an “out of control” 4th grader and then his father, it helped remind me how easy it is to “become frustrated” with a student. Many times it is difficult to keep the situation in perspective when a child is “pushing your buttons.” If you feel that a situation is beginning to escalate or feel that your patience is waning, it is OK to ask for help. If it is a relatively minor situation or minor class disruption, ask a neighboring teacher to watch the child for a time out. The time out can serve to let the child refocus while also allowing you to refocus. If it is a major disruption to your classroom, please do not hesitate to ask for help from the office. We are here to help you maintain a good learning environment.

Friday Update on Monday
December 7, 2007
The expectations, stress, and pressure of being part of an excellent school can sometimes be overwhelming. The adult worries that we sometimes carry can also make it difficult to focus on what is important. When I saw the winter musical on Tuesday night, it reminded me of the wonderful things that our children are capable of. I encourage you to remember what is MOST important when it comes to our tasks at school. We have all been blessed to have the opportunity to work with children so we should take advantage of that every day. Thank you for your commitment to your students and your desire to be THE BEST.

Friday Update
January 11, 2008
As we get near the end of second quarter, it is important to reflect on how well we have done during the first half of the school year. While there are always ups and downs, we have to be proud of the job we have done.
Our grade level alignment meetings were the first step in helping us create a more close knit “professional learning community.” While we did learn some things about how to improve the process for next time, it proved to be an effective exercise that can make us better. Again, thank you for your willingness to allow me to lead you to a different way of doing things.

Friday Update
January 25, 2008
As I left school last night after our PTA board meeting, I could not help but notice the enormous full moon in the sky above. Anybody who has ever worked in a school has something other than space flights come to mind when they see a full moon. We usually have a sense of dread as we think about how active and disobedient our students will be. It is easy during this time of year to lose patience with your students. With only one workday from now until March 20, it will be a tough stretch of time. Hang in there!
Hopefully, your grade level SIT representative has already shared some information about Positive Behavior Support. If they have not, please ask them about it. Our SIT team will vote next week to decide whether we would like to implement this program for Southwest. Through my experience, I have seen how it can have a tremendously positive effect on a school. While discipline is not a huge issue here, it can improve. We can also make our school safer by implementing Positive Behavior Support. If you have questions about PBS, please ask.

This week, our SIT team voted unanimously to implement “Positive Behavior Support” for the 2008-09 school year. The rest of this year and this summer will be spent preparing to be ready for the start of next year. One of the first steps in this process is to assemble a PBS team which will be involved in the details of how we implement this program for Southwest. The team will receive training, set up our behavior expectation matrix as well as our reward system. If you are interested in becoming a part of this team, please let me know.

Friday Update
February 8, 2008
Thanks for what you all do every day. My job often requires me to look too often at the “things” in our school that are not going as well as they should. Several times a day, however, I stop to “smell the roses” and realize how fortunate that I am to be a part of Southwest. Our school is above average in more ways than I can list. It is not perfect, but those of us who have worked in other schools know how lucky we are. Thank you for all you do AND count your blessings that WE are able to be a part of making Southwest THE BEST!

Friday Update
February 22, 2008
Thank you to those of you who have already come in for your 10 minute conference. It is good to hear your views on Southwest (even if we talk about something that needs to be improved). The only way to improve our school is to discuss the parts that are not working as well as possible. There is no way for us to do EVERYTHING that everyone thinks is best, but the more feedback we get, the better chance we have to improve our way of doing things.
I would like for you to continue to frame our conversations in the following way. Please be prepared to answer the following questions:
· What has gone well with your part of our school this year?

Friday Update
February 1, 2008

February 15, 2008
Our ten minute conferences begin this Monday, February 18th. If you have not done so already, please sign up outside my door. I look forward to hearing your views on how our school is doing and how we can make it better. There is no way for us to do EVERYTHING that everyone thinks is best, but the more feedback we get, the better chance we have to improve our way of doing things.
I would like for you to frame our conversations in the follow way. Please be prepared to answer the following questions:
· What has gone well with your part of our school this year?
· What could you improve about your part of our school?
· School-wide, what has gone well this year?
· School-wide, what would you like to improve in our school?

Friday Update
March 7, 2008
I have enjoyed the staff conferences that I have had so far. There are several that I need to make up, but I will have more time openings outside my door by Monday. As we begin to look at next year (while finishing this one well), it is good to hear your ideas. Please do not be afraid to ask if something is possible. Many great ideas start as “sketchy possibilities.”
PBS team training is Monday from 8:30 – 3:30. Kim, Tom, and I will be involved in the training. If you have BIG issues, please feel free to ask Nellie to find us. If it is something small that can wait one day for us to handle, that would be great. Have a great weekend!!

Friday Update
March 14, 2008
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to be a part of our Southwest Positive Behavior Support team. Monday’s training was a great start to something that I believe will help our school in a number of ways. There is a lot to be done between now and next year, but I am confident that we can all do what it takes to make it work well for Southwest.
The weeks leading up to spring break can be some of the most stressful times of a school year. Our children are definitely ready for a break and we are too! Remember that it is natural to be short on patience right now – especially when Sally isn’t doing her homework and Johnny is disturbing class. Our leadership team will do our best to be even more visible so that we provide you the support you need.
It is also OK to ask us to watch your class for a few minutes so that you can refocus on the difficult task of making sure that “Sally and Johnny” learn what they are supposed to. Thank you for all that you do every day. Hang in there – spring break is just around the corner. Have a great weekend!!

Friday Update
"The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with,
but whether it's the same problem you had last year."
- John Foster Dulles

“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.”
